STUDIO WILLIAM
LEAF
Winner of Studio William's Sweet Instrument of Desire Competition, Anabela Chan has developed a totally new concept in entertaining with the multifunctional and sensual tool, Leaf, designed for eating desserts. Inspired by the ancient Asian tradition of using nature's leaves as eating utensils, Leaf can be used to scoop, prong, slice and present different styles of dessert, canapés and petit-fours. Its unique design injects curiosity and fun into dining, and will immediately spark conversation when placed on a table. Leaf is weighed, yet balanced, and manufactured using the highest quality 18/10 stainless steel. Its brushed satin surface adds a sensory, textured experience when placed in the mouth. William Welch, chief executive of Studio William, said the competition was about giving students the opportunity and motivation to indulge their creativity while developing a functional piece: ‘Excellent design and creativity is essential to the continued development of beautiful cutlery if we are to keep pace with chefs and enable them to find more innovative ways of delivering food to diners. The standard of entries we received was incredibly high and the results speak for themselves.’ Anabela added: 'I have a major sweet tooth so this competition immediately appealed! Having focused more on jewellery design to date, I approached the competition by thinking about what I believe cutlery can be, not what it is. I wanted to create something that was tactile and aesthetically intriguing, as well as fun, versatile and functional.' Set of Four. Leaf was designed by Anabela whilst as a 2nd year jewellery student of the Royal College of Art, it was exhibited at the V&A and available nationwide since launch at Selfridges, Harrods and John Lewis.
